Dr Lewis Campbell held the large Friends of Juniper Hall audience in fascination in March, talking about the River Mole, its many environmental pressures and challenges and the inspiring work the South East Rivers Trust is doing to help restore it to health. Impassable weirs are being replaced with rock ramps or baffles, allowing fish to travel up and down the river freely; artificial concrete walls are being replaced with naturally diverse river banks; natural flood management is increasing biodiversity while reducing the risks of flash flooding further downstream; and citizen scientists are measuring the water quality of the river which continues to suffer badly with pollution. An excellent talk, depressing, but also hugely inspiring.
