October talk, and the Friends were treated to a stroll back through time looking at how the impressive grounds of Juniper Hall have changed over the centuries, from its elegant era of outdoor entertainment and ornamental ponds, and the planting of the massive cedar trees way back in 1780. The several different owners across time added brew house and ice house, walled gardens, greenhouses and vineries. War time years saw Canadian troops at Juniper Hall, and it briefly acted as a military hospital, but only for the first episode of Foyles War! Just after the war, Juniper Hall and its surrounding 33 acres were sold to the National Trust, and the Field Studies Council (Council for the Promotion of Field Studies at the time) took on a leasehold and has occupied the hall since, managing the grounds for wildlife to inspire its countless students.
